Avon Motorsport reaches 30th anniversary milestone

Avon Motorsport – the racing division of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Europe Ltd. - is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, boasting an ever-expanding championship portfolio for the forthcoming season.
Having previously supplied tyres through organisations such as Bernie Ecclestone’s International Race Tire Service, Avon Motorsport became an entity in its own right in February 1983. Since then it has become a world-leading motorsport tyre supplier and celebrated its most successful year on record in 2012, with a remarkable 198 motor racing champions running on Avon Motorsport products around the world.
Since its inception, Avon has provided specialist race tyres for almost every type of motor racing on both three and four wheels, from British Formula 3 to rallycross and motorcycle side car racing. Avon has maintained a strong presence in all of these areas, while also expanding its involvement into other motorsport applications.
In recent years Avon has increased its presence in sportscar racing; 2013 will be its eighth season as title sponsor and sole tyre supplier of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship and the brand recently secured a deal to supply tyres to the Swedish GT Championship.
Avon has also firmly established itself as the tyre supplier of choice in rallycross – a unique fusion of gravel and asphalt racing – and will be sole tyre supplier to the French Rallycross Championship for the next three years. The Cooper Tires brand will also be a principal partner to the FIA European Rallycross Championship for 2013.
Away from circuit racing, Avon Motorsport remains highly visible as the company enters its second full season this year as title sponsor of the Avon Tyres MSA British Hillclimb Championship, and is also poised to provide tyres to a 610-bhp Mercedes hillclimb powerhouse developed by tuning house Carlsson later this year.
From state-of-the-art muscle cars to racing classics, Avon, which supplied tyres to the Formula One World Championship in 1954 and 1958 and again in 1981 and 1982 prior to the foundation of Avon Motorsport, now supplies the FIA Historic Formula One Championship. The championship features F1 cars from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s and visits top circuits across Europe.
Paul Coates, Manager of Avon Motorsport, said, “It’s a fantastic milestone to reach and we’re very proud of our extremely varied heritage. Motorsport has changed considerably over the past 30 years and we’ve adapted to this. It is now a truly global industry and Avon’s involvement in various motorsport applications across the world reflects this.
“In 2012, we celebrated our most successful year on record, and this year looks set to be even busier as we add some more key championships. We have a very dedicated team here and we’re all very excited about the year ahead.”
